Thesis: The play J.B. models many of the same struggles that Job went through because the book of Job acts as inspiration the book of Job
The play J.B. was written shortly after a period of hardship and trials, because the book of Job outlines many of these struggles as well as how to make it through, J.B. naturally follows the same plot and resolution as inspiration to its readers.
Idea Of Comparison (From Septuagint) | Show how strong of an effect spouses can have on one another. Show how Satan wants to drive a wedge between married couples. |
Job Chapter two | J.B. Scene Eight |
Job 2:9 “And after much time had passed, his wife said to him, how long will you hold out, saying, saying, ‘behold, I wait yet a little while, expecting the hope of my deliverance? For, behold, your memorial is abolished from the earth, even your sons and daughters, the pangs and pains of my womb which I bore in vain with sorrows; and you yourself sit down to spend the nights in the open air among the corruption of worms, and I am a wanderer and servant from place to place and house to house, waiting for the setting of the sun, that I may rest from my labors and my pangs which now beset me: but say some word against the lord and die.” This verse is long so I will defiantly break it up into multiple discussion sections. Mostly comparing with the points from scene eight | Sarah: “We have the choice to live or die, all of us…curse God and die.” Compare to Jobs wife and how she reacted. |
Job 2:7-8 “So the devil went out from the Lord, and struck Job with sore boils from his feet to his head. And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, and sat upon a dung heap outside the city” Satan turns his body and his wife against him. Also can use pieces of verse 9 in this comparison | Page: 108 Analyze how Nickels instigates/cheers for Sarah and J.B. to fight. Shows how Satan enjoys married couples to fight. |
Job 2:10 “But he looked on her, and said to her, You have spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things?” Show the differences in spiritual believes and how it acts as a driving wedge. Also will use some pieces of verse 9. | Page 109: Analyze how the couple is separated on how they view God in their lives instead of being unified. Shows that Couples that aren’t unified in their spiritual believes are prone to conflict |
Idea of Second Comparison (From Septuagint) | Show how strong a marriage can be, even after being tested like Job and J.B.’s marriage. A strong marriage takes active commitment and intention |
Job Chapter 31 | J.B Scene 11 |
Job 31:1 “I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin” In Jobs position, it would be easy to let his fleshly desires out and seek other woman other than his wife, since she’s not sticking by his side. But he displays that it takes intention and commitment when in a marriage because it wont always be easy. He never breaks his covenant even when its tough. | Page 151-152 Sarah made a covenant to love J.B., Similar to his covenant to not look at other woman. She realizes this and comes back to ask for forgivingness and hopes to rebuild their relationship and lives. Shows that marriages take intentional actions to commit each other. |
Job 31:7 “If my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if my heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands” Jobs marriage might be the last thing on his mind at this point, he has a lot on his plate. However, he stays faithful and doesn’t stary from staying faithful to God and his wife. | Page 150: Sarah leaves and seeks new life. But she realizes there is nothing for her without her husband. Shows that Sarah came back even though she might not of wanted to at the start. She doesn’t follow her earthly desires |
I’m not sure if I’m allowed to do this since its not in the focus section of chapter 31, but I would like to include a verse from the last chapter. Showing that God blessed him and gave him more than he had before. Including more children with assuming his original wife. I could then compare to the last page of the J.B. scene 11 | Page 153 Sarah and Job strive to rekindle their marriage and life. Shows that by not giving up and working through the tough times, they came out the other side better and stronger. |
