Final Paper Memo

Focus of Paper: Roskolnikov struggles both mentally and physically throughout the novel as a result of his actions. There seems to be a parallel between the the disciples “cross to bear” for being a Christian, and Roskolnikov’s “cross to bear” for committing murder. Exploring Roskolnikov’s decisions and actions depicts the the biblical theme of bearing each our own cross.

Possibly can expand to the idea of marriage when it comes to each of us bearing our own cross. Marriage allows us to have someone else in our lives to endure with us. This is depicted through Sonya in the novel

  • Part 5 chapter 4 – Sonya learns of Roskolnikovs murder and pledges to be with him throughout his consequences.
  • Part 2 chapter 1 – Roskolnikov comes to realize what he has done
  • Part 6 chapter 2– Roskolnikov is rattled by the inspector, the weight of what he has done starts to reach its maximum intensity
